The only thing necessary for photography apart from a camera and the photographer is light (although I am sure somebody somewhere is working on replacing the photographer with a machine as we speak...)
Because of this indisputable fact, it's always a challenge for us when a couple decides on a romantic, candle lit wedding, with all the house lights turned off. In a fast moving, fluid situation like a wedding, we usually set out cameras to "auto-focus". This feature cleverly measures the distance between the lens and the subjects and mechanically sets the focus with the aid of servo motors built into the lens. The problem is, that when the lights are down, the poor focus mechanism goes into "melt down" mode, as it simply cannot 'see' the subject. The end result is that the camera refuses to take the shot, no matter how hard we try to push the shutter button.
It's times like these that old school film photography experience comes in handy. Most of our photographers are old enough to have started their careers
on manual focus camera - not out of choice, but it's just that nothing else was available until the latter part of the 70's.
Because of this past experience, we have no trouble taking our cameras out of Autofocus and focusing manually when the situation requires it. The end result is that our low light photography is crystal clear and the customer is amazed at the results.
