The video technology available today is amazing. You can get a $1000 high definition video camera that would put a $100,000 camera from 10 years ago to shame. Likewise editing software (known as non linear editing), has come down in price to the point that anyone can afford it. Hollywood type technology is at everyone's fingertips.
We've been watching with interest how amateur and professional videographers alike, have been using this new technology in recent years, especially in relation to wedding videography. We observed a trend we call "we do it 'coz we can'... In other words, budding Spielbergs throw in every possible special effect. Wild transitions, fancy fonts, crazy effects, the lot...
We realize that taste is a subjective matter, but this is the question we have to ask ourselves: "If we look at the video in 5/10/20 years time, will it still look clever and fresh, or will we be watching it with a cringe..."
Just as an aside, did you notice that ever since amateurs discovered "professional" effects, Hollywood started using a minimalist approach? There is a hint there for all of us.
Our idea of a great wedding video is one that accurately documents the events of the day. One that captures the feel and essence of the event, the emotions, the colour and the sounds. We want the viewer to get involved and feel like a part of it rather than say "... gee that heart-shape transition is such a clever trick, I wonder how they did it..."
